Charles claims that William F. Buckley did a lot to "purge the conservative movement of its far-right nut cases, the racists and crackpots who poisoned the well for too long. "
Charles apparently forgot that the National Review, Buckley's magazine, was against civil rights for blacks:
"WHY THE SOUTH MUST PREVAIL", National Review 4 (August 24 1957), p. 149:SOURCE:
The central question that emerges -- and it is not a parliamentary question or a question that is answered by merely consulting a catalogue of the rights of American citizens, born Equal -- is whether the White community in the South is entitled to take such measures as are necessary to prevail, politically and culturally, in areas where it does not predominate numerically? The sobering answer is Yes -- the White community is so entitled because, for the time being, it is the advanced race....

He's denouncing far right nut cases, racists and crackpots? After providing a home to them for so many years? Good stuff. CJ is becoming blatant in his efforts to distance himself from the Lizard Minions, at least in words.

After personally recommending the blog of "Carl in Jerusalem", a Kahane-supporting extremist conspiracy nut for a web award?

It's odd. I never knew that NR had so much of this stuff from the civil rights era until reading it on Sadly, No!, and I'm admittedly a bit shocked. Then again, that entire era and how blacks here have been treated is always a shock, no matter how many books I read.
Admittedly, I should track back some of the rather shocking things that have been published in the left-wing magazine "The Nation", especially during WWII, which were rather rotten. Still I don't think they beat the things being dredged up from old National Reviews! Apparently Buckley was "Standing athwart history yelling" much more than just "Stop!". Sheesh.
