Sacrifices

Further to Charles' approval of Sgt. Eddie Jeffers' insulting suggestion that "the American people have not even been asked to sacrifice a single thing," the two might like to consider that at the very least, thanks to this war the American people have sacrificed schools, healthcare and housing to a questionable cause.

Yes, that's right: while Bush is making billion-dollar cutbacks to essential services that are particularly important to the poor (the constituency that most soldiers come from), he has so far spent half a trillion dollars getting even with daddy's nemesis and will ask Congress for half as much again next week.

If that's not a sacrifice, I don't know what is. It comes to several thousand dollars per taxpayer, and is likely to continue to increase as America deals with the fallout of this disaster. Keep that in mind the next time some blinkered wingnut drone says "I know how to spend my money better than the government does."

You can say Bush sacrificed our debt liability, but to say he sacrificed demestic services is inaccurate. The GOP congress has spent more then any Democratic congress on social programs...

One of the reasons conservatives revolted in 06'

I'm Eddie's father and you're probably the same small brain that tried to attack my son through an email. You're equating paying taxes and lost domestic spending equal to what my son is sacrificing. That is pathetic.

a) We ain't been sending no emails to no Eddies.

b) Have Americans had to face cutbacks on education, housing and healthcare over the past four years? Will they have to face further cutbacks in the next two? Case closed.

I have no idea who Eddie is. I believe you didn't send any emails to him.

Actually, if you look at the budget for the past 6 years, the GOP has increased spending on the Dept of Education, Healthcare and Public housing.

Why do you think conservatives are complaining the GOP lost site of restrainging "big government"?

Here is a link to our budgets for the past 6 years....

Bush has spent more then Clinton (or any Democratic recent Democratic President) in his years of office.

(sigh)

Money he didn't have, and which the American people are going to have to pay back eventually...

X, look at the very first post on this thread where I said: "You can say Bush sacrificed our debt liability"

By the way - as for national debt, yeah - it has increased, but as a percentage of GDP - I suggest you look at the history

Take a look at what cutbacks are proposed. Ask yourself which cutbacks are coming up in future when someone decides to tackle the budget crisis. Then tell us whether or not the Iraq war could have anything to do with it and who is going to suffer most from the lack of federal money.

You said->Take a look at what cutbacks are proposed.

What cutbacks? You mean the reform that needs to be made to New Deal ideas like medicare and social security?

You mean these entitlement programs that are headed toward bankrupty when the baby boomers retire? Those great socialist ideas?

Where the social security fund will be 2 workers for every retirie very soon? (the same exact ratio as married couple and say their parents?)

You mean the bloated inefficient medicare system we have that is run by the government except the private sector? (as glorious as our other fiscally and peroformance failing 'public' institutions like our schools?)

X, you do realize that tax receipts are at a all time high and that our GDP and financial sectors are at all time highs as well? That our umployment and gross wages are up? That we've increased spending on every domestic program since Clinton?

Why do you think the GOP is considered "the big government" party the last 6 years? You democrats should be happy!

Yes, we've had deficits - but you must understand that if our GDP outpaces that level of debt, it is a good thing? It's basic econ 101. That our debt to gdp ratio is below our historical level?

What Bush did with the Iraq war is yet to be determined by history, but economically - what he was able to pull off in light of 9/11, the biggest Stock Market Crash since 29' and mass corporate scandals is nothing short of amazing = and he will have the same halo that Reagan had in handling our economy.

Here is a simple excercise - what specific cutback are you referring too?

Find another dead horse to flog. Although I support Bush's decisions on the war, he's been spending so much on domestic programs you'd think he was a Democrat.
