The company he keeps

VN sent us a nice little screengrab of a typical Lizard mind in full flow:

Charming, those people at littlegreenfootballs.com , eh?

UPDATE: 'Woodie' points out that Kaintuck (the above racist) has been blocked and his comments have been deleted by Charles. Quite right. Still, two issues remain: why are nutters like Kaintuck attracted to LGF in the first place? And second, what's stopping CJ from making some public statements about the problem of racists posting comments on his blog? How about a clear statement from Charles about what he thinks of the possiblity of Barak Obama maybe becoming the first African-American president of the United States?

Well Tex, the sentence only makes sense when you add the "African" to it. After all, Barack Obama won't be the first American president of the US if elected.

Second of all, there is no shame in being African, or African-/Asian-/Hispanic-American for that matter. I thought America was built upon the principle that people of all heritages are equal.

And finally, how else would you paraphrase this statement, about Obama being the first president from that background, without using the dreadfully politically incorrect "A" word?

Gee Sphinx,

This is a tough one. Where did you get the stupid "shame" thing, bye the way? Did I say there was?

Let me think...How do I present something different about Obama without mentioning "African".

Thinking? Thinking? Thinking? Got it!

How about black American?

You mean "Barack HUSSEIN Obama," don't you?

[just a wild guess about how Charles will refer to BHO if he gets the nomination]

"a clear statement from Charles about what he thinks of the possiblity of Barak Obama maybe becoming the first African-American president of the United States"

To maintain his entirely fictitious pretense of being a fair-minded, non-partisan blogger, Charles will never say in so many words, "ZOMG DON'T VOTE FOR OBAMA EVAR!11!one!". But the several hundred snide, smirking, hit-and-run anti-Obama "articles" he will post in the event that Obama becomes the nominee (and even if he doesn't) will be statement enough. As we all know, that's his MO.

Tex, if you're going to accuse X of being "racist" for using the term 'African-American', then you're implying that there's something inflammatory to that description.

However:

"In this same period, a smaller number of people favored Afro-American. In the 1980s the term African American was advanced on the model of, for example, German American. Jesse Jackson popularized the term, and it was quickly adopted by major media. Many blacks in America expressed a preference for the term, as it was formed in the same way as names for others of the many ethnic groups. Some argued further that, because of the historical circumstances surrounding the capture, enslavement and systematic attempts to de-Africanize blacks in the U.S. under chattel slavery, most African Americans are unable to trace their ancestry to a specific African nation; hence, the entire continent serves as a geographic marker.

For many, African American is more than a name expressive of cultural and historical roots. The term expresses pride in Africa and a sense of kinship and solidarity with others of the African diaspora— an embracing of the notion of pan-Africanism as earlier enunciated by prominent African thinkers such as Marcus Garvey, W. E. B. Du Bois, Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and, later, George Padmore."
- Wikipedia.

So if the term "Black American" is ok, "African American" is just as good.

And V, I think that Charles will feverishly start to search for absolutely anything he can present as a scandal in case Obama wins the election. It'll be an ongoing 4-year long smear campaign, and he won't be arsed to be too subtle about it.

Sphinx,

So if the term "Black American" is ok, "African American" is just as good.

Nah, I completely disagree. What's new between the two of us?

The problem in America isn't our lack of diversity. It's our lack of unity. IMHO the requirement for all of us to designate our history of origin is an example of trying to draw lines in the sand.

As a Muslim, I would have to believe you could understand my concern more than most. Wouldn't you rather be some citizen without the categorization? And if the need for some color descriptor necessary why not simply black, brown or white?

I hate the term "African-American" and refuse to use it. It's like saying "people of color" ??? WTH does that mean? More politically correct bunk.

The Sphinx said...

Fine, don't use the term if you don't want to, but as long as it doesn't offend the people it concerns, it's ok with me.

And no, I don't really care about being categorized as "Egyptian" or "Muslim", as long as I get fair treatment here. And being integrated rather well into this society I neither really need nor want anything more, least of all covering up my identity for the sake of unity.
Using such descriptors isn't what's bad IMHO, it's any discrimination that tries to justify itself based on them.

And finally, if Obama wins the election, it'll be the one-liner news headline for days, that America is now being lead by a black man for the first time in its history. This is a fact, Obama knows it himself, and I don't think this very statement (Which we are arguing about) is in any way offensive, or 'racist'.
