The hypocrisy of Charles Johnson #48932

The honourable California-based blogger Charles Johnson has broken Godwin's Law by equating Hamas to Nazis for a term used by a Hamas spokesman that coincides with a Nazi cartoon from the late 30s.

The problem doesn't lie there. But by that standard, may we remind our readership to take the LGF Quiz..

/update: Sorry, the link to the LGF page wasn't working. Fixed now.

"Broken Godwin's Law?" Godwin's Law isn't something a person "breaks." But speak frankly with us, O Sphinx: are you concerned about the reach of the Zionist octopus's tentacles?

Oh, say, about that LGF Quiz...

I CALL SHENANIGANS!! I chose one of the quotations at random from the list of sources. As it happened, I picked this one:

www.littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/?entry=9103

It was listed as the source for the quotation in question 4:

"Vermin love the Slime, and they will hate any attempt to clean up the mess. Our house had become terribly infested with horrible filth. It is to be expected that the creatures living on dirt would resist and fight back. But that is all the more reason to bring to successful completion the cleanup process."

Sounds vile, doesn't it? BUT LOOK AT THE ORIGINAL CONTEXT. Go to the link and scroll down to comment 40. This was NOT, I repeat NOT, the work of an LGFer. It was a quotation from The Mesopotamian. Furthermore, it was NOT describing Muslims as vermin: it was a MUSLIM IRAQI calling others in his own country vermin -- Baathists, apparently.

Seriously, to present such a quotation as evidence of fascist qualities among the LGF comment corps is dishonest beyond belief. Shame on whoever created this quiz. And shame on you, Sphinx, for your credulity.

If you read the rest of the comments to that post, you will indeed see some horrible screeds from a guy named Amos. And you will also see him get called to task by the other commenters. That's how freedom of speech works. Open up the marketplace of ideas, and let people hash it out in words.

Give it up, guys. Hatred for LGF has warped your minds.

"A second point. "Tu quoque" arguments rarely work. What is your point in referring people to the "LGF Quiz?" Are you endorsing the idea that certain LGF commenters are Nazis because they use language tantamount to Hitler's? Then by your own argument, the Hamas quote IS Hitlerian."

The point is extremely simple:
Charles throws the Nazi accusation around for somebody using a term that the real Nazis did. So by Charles Johnson's own standard, he has been (and still is) housing a bunch of Nazis at his own site. I don't know how you managed to get this upside down.

"P.S. Check out Zombietime's latest photo essay, where one protester has a sign supporting "forced sterilization" for people with whom he disagrees. Would you say he is a Nazi, and by implication, so also are all his fellow left-wing protesters?"

I'd say he's an idiot, and would have no reason to judge ALL leftist protesters as Nazis for whatever sign he has been holding up, just as it isn't ALL lizards' fault for the stupid comments found in the quiz (Though lizards with sensible comments are rather rare).
But again: If Charles thinks he can tag people with the term "Nazi" for saying a term they did, then he has - by that standard - a site that is a safe haven for Nazis.

And about that one Mesopotamian comment: Fine, I'll let you have that.

What about the rest? :-) You going to try and fine some lame defense for it?

I suggest you give it up. The double standards of LGF speaks for itself. We just like to present it for the world's amusement.

We're going to just need to post the URL and cut & paste. Charles Johnson, technical mastermind (LOL) seems to have little to do lately other than reroute links. Perhaps when he is done chasing them all down, he can actually make his site run a little better so that the search doesn't take hours.

I wonder if destroying our links here is hurting the links from people on his side trying to link favorably to the same posts. I obviously know little about such web matters, but it hardly seems likely that he can differentiate between everyone, especially the pro-LGFers who have smaller blogs or are just emailing. I guess it's time to email Charles again, eh?

Actually, check that link. I got it to work after removing the initial part of the URL. This may not be one of the CJ reroutes. Actually, since it sent me to an 'error' page and not something inane that CJ thinks is funny, it's probably not.

Uh, Sphinx?

(1) How can one say CJ safehouses "Nazis" when the quiz that supposedly shows parallel language is bogus?

(2) Given that the quiz is bogus, why don't you remove the link?

(3) You never told us your opinion of the "Zionist octopus." Do you agree with the Hamas spokesman about the threatening reach of the Zionist octopus?

As far as one can see only one element of the quiz is 'bogus' this does not mean that the other similarities are less real.

(2) Given that the quiz is bogus, why don't you remove the link?

The quiz hasn't been proven as bogus so that's a silly question.

(3) You never told us your opinion of the "Zionist octopus." Do you agree with the Hamas spokesman about the threatening reach of the Zionist octopus?

What's your opinion on the flying spaghetti monster?

Even if one of the quotes was not said by a lizard him-/herself, it was approvingly posted on the site, which leads me to the assumption that the person had nothing against its content.

(2) Given that the quiz is bogus, why don't you remove the link?

The quiz hasn't been proved bogus. Do so first, then try to tell me what link to remove or not.

Oh and I won't be pressed into removing any links I've posted, thank you very much. Only if they're broken.

(3) You never told us your opinion of the "Zionist octopus." Do you agree with the Hamas spokesman about the threatening reach of the Zionist octopus?

Not in this sense that it's engulfing the whole Arab region, but the Zionist government in fact has done more than its fair share of destruction in the Palestinian territories and in Lebanon.

I'd rather stick with 'Mafia organization'. Describes the situation a lot better.

Poor assumption. I can't read the original poster's mind, but person A can quote person B's writings not because A necessarily agrees with B, but because A believes B's writings are indicative of something.

Sure it has. The quiz states that quotes are either from a Nazi potentate or "a poster from Littlegreenfootballs.com dehumanizing Palestinians, arabs [sic] or Iraqis." I chose a quote at random to test this claim. Investigating the source, I found that the quote was (a) NOT the words of an LGF poster, but rather a Muslim Iraqi; and (b) NOT dehumanizing Palestinians, Arabs, or Iraqis as a race or people, but rather singling out a certain political group (probably Baathists).

Oh and I won't be pressed into removing any links I've posted, thank you very much. Only if they're broken.

So much for intellectual honesty. The quiz is "fake but accurate," huh?

I'd rather stick with 'Mafia organization'. Describes the situation a lot better.

Are we talking about Hamas now?

Well, it's been fun. Thankfully, I get to go off for the weekend, so the last word is yours if you want it.

To Anon 2/14/2008 02:30:00 PM:

What's your opinion on the flying spaghetti monster?

Tedious, stale, adolescent; an only modestly funny and philosophically jejune idea that has long since passed its expiration date. What's your point? Do you mean to compare it to the "Zionist octopus," both being multi-tentacled? Well, if you mean to imply that neither of them really exists, I guess you and I are in fine agreement. Thanks for being such a chum!

Rico, whenever (if) you get back, I await an explanation why you didn't try and refute all the other comments. You've cunningly evaded that question.

While I don't agree with the following video in full, I think Sphinx has demonstrated the problem of the so-called "Left" through his moral inversion.

The facts of the matter are that the Hamas are directly linked to the Nazis through the Muslim Brotherhood - they want the final solution. Take your time to read Sphinx's posts, they speak for themselves. Then take a gander at the following link:
YouTube Video.

The fact that you use the term 'facts' in that sentence is great.
