CrescentWatch 2006

The first episode of the new season of Doctor Who aired on BBC One this evening. It's set in the year 5,000,000,023, when Earth will have been vaporized by the Sun and its inhabitants scattered to the four corners of the Universe.

In the year 5,000,000,023, as imagined by writer and producer Russell T. Davies, there is a universal symbol for health-care facilities.

And that symbol...

is...

a green crescent. (Actually it was referred to in the script as a "green moon.")

Oy.

Not only that, but the hospital in which the episode takes place bears an odd resemblance to the Burj al-Arab in Dubai. Say no more! Davies, whose previous credits include the UK version of Queer as Folk, is clearly a Eurabian dhimmi appeasing blah blah blah.

Or maybe he's just taking the piss. Because, as was widely noted in another context, sometimes a crescent is just a crescent.
