Today was the 60th anniversary of V-J Day -- or, for all intents and purposes, the day World War II ended. Public observances were held in Britain, Canada, and Australia.

And also in New York, where the famous Times Square smooch was re-enacted by a diverse crowd of New Yorkers, including a same-sex couple or two, along with the actual nurse and soldier from Eisenstadt's photograph. What fun!

I wonder what sort of passionate public celebration will spontaneously erupt on V-I (or V-GWOT or V-GTAW*) Day. There certainly hasn't been anything like this during this war yet, "Mission Accomplished" notwithstanding. Maybe the idea of a "kiss-in" is just too Sixties. But those Sixties kids apparently got the idea from their parents -- you know, the Greatest Generation.
