Fair and balanced

Massive Terror Attack in Egypt, MSM Yawns, sez Charles. (http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/?entry=16769)

And commenter 'LGF Watch Watcher' in the post below accuses LGF Watch of ignoring the story.

Well, consider it un-ignored. And since LGF is apparently the ne plus ultra of hard-hitting, up-to-the-minute international news coverage, let's see what the lizards are saying, shall we? The following is an accurate synopsis of the first 50 comments, along with the number of posts in which each observation is repeated (the total is slightly greater than 50, because some commenters make multiple 'points' within the same post):

See? Islamist terror has nothing to do with Iraq. (4)

The liberal MSM sucks. (12)

We should nuke them.

Blair and Bush aren't doing enough.

I made a typo.

We should be afraid of China too.

All Muslims are extremists who are capable of violence. (7)

Sharm el-Sheik used to be an Israeli town.

The MSM isn't really ignoring the story. (3)

It's interesting that these atrocities all occur during U.S. daylight hours.

People who vacation in Arab countries deserve to be attacked by terrorists. (2)

What a shame. (4)

Muslims behave like animals toward women.

Al-Qaeda seems to be weakening and/or losing support. (2)

"Wasn't there a bombing this past week in the same general location?"

This could happen anywhere. (2)

Some other cultures behave like animals toward women too.

Not all Muslims are evil.

There was a terrorist attack against Westerners in Turkey recently.

It was caused by the Kurds.

Maybe this will be a wake-up call to the Egyptians. (2)

The liberals will probably blame Bush and/or Rove. (2)

Why didn't the MSM mention any Israeli casualties?

Kofi Annan will probably use this as another opportunity to steal money.

Al-Qaeda has claimed responsibility.

So on this issue at least, let there be no accusations of "cherry-picking." The list above represents the entire comments thread (as of half an hour ago) in all its intellectual majesty.

And, for the record, LGF Watch extends its heartfelt condolences to the victims and their loved ones, and its unconditional support for all efforts aimed at bringing those responsible to justice.

You understand the difference between news reporting and commentary, don't you?

Here's a hint: You won't find sarcasm or snark in reportage. Commentary may well be replete with it.

But really, the most important thing having to do with terrorists killing some 75 people and wounding many more is what the comments at LGF say about it. So, in the in terest of bringing this tremendously importatnt material to your readers, here's the comments you missed:

Think Peace!

The resort is popular with Israelis and Europeans, which is no doubt why it was targeted.

Roll out the stock footage.

Animals!

Tourism is big bux in Egypt. Watch them get to the bottom of this quick. And not very nicely, either.

Hey, I'm only up to #8 and you've already missed five.

Feh.

BTW, I'm sure Charles would appreciate he compliment. Shall I pass it along for you?

The comments listed above are from the second thread about the bombings in Egypt; your excerpts are from the first one.

"You won't find sarcasm or snark in reportage."

And that bit about "MSM yawns" was what exactly?

If Charles is really serious about being picked up as a news source by Google News, he's going to have to provide a bit more than lengthy pull quotes from the MSM and the occasional snarky aside.

I don't think he's as concerned with being tracked by Google News as he is that they'd consider the likes of DU and National Vanguard as news, but not LGF.

Media bias is one of LGF's themes, and it's evident at Google.

And that bit about "MSM yawns" was what exactly?

Why, that's a snarky headline. It's also accurate.

Would you be happier if it read "Major Terror Attack in Egypt, MSM Doesn't Consider it a Major News Story"?

That's a bit clunky. How would you have written it?

Winston Smith said...

I wouldn't have written it at all, because it's not true.

The so-called MSM is covering the terrorist attacks. It's currently the top story on the websites of CNN, BBC News, CBS News, ABC News, MSNBC, the New York Times, the L.A. Times, Le Monde, and Libération, just to name a few. (If you can think of any prominent MSM outlets I've omitted, do let me know.)

Oh, wait a minute: the Grauniad is leading with a story about a second arrest in conjunction with last Thursday's attempted terror bombings in London.

Pablo said...

Of course they're covering it, Winston. But not like it's a big thing, when it obviously is.

Consider 7/7 and 7/21. 4 bombs in London kill 56. 4 bombs in London fail to detonate and kill no one.

All of the news networks go to full London coverage. All of the regular players have multiple London stories. Even radio goes all London, with occasional breaks for headline updates.

Yesterday, 3 bombs killed 65+ in Sharm el-Sheikh. The MSM is treating it as one of the top headlines. there's no need to go all Egypt all the time. There's no wall to wall coverage. There's no "What do we do now?" punditry like being broadcast like there is for London. There's no "Why do they hate us? Why do they do it?" frenzy like there is with London.

While it's a story, it's almost ignored given the size of it and the coverage that similar incidents get.

In fact, if you go to Google News right now, it is the top headline is the Egypt bombing with 1653 stories. Many, many of those are the same wire stories, as if usually the case with breaking news.

The second top story is London with 1601 stories. The London story is 48 hours to 2 weeks old, depending on how you want to look at it. Egypt happened today.

The coverage of the Egypt bombing, given the nature of the story, is underwhelming. Charles notes that in the headline and then ...*gasp*...links to details, and notes that the MO is classic al-Qaeda.

What's wrong with that picture?

And commenter 'LGF Watch Watcher' in the post below accuses LGF Watch of ignoring the story.

BTW, I didn't accuse you of anything. I asked what the chances were that you'd cover it. Please don't misquote me.

And thank you for covering the Egypt bombing. It bears discussion.

Of all the absurdities floated by Chuck, the notion that blogs like LGF can do a better job reporting the news than the MSM is the most patently ridiculous.

The closest the Chuckster ever got to a piece of news was reporting on Powerline's discovery about the Dan Rather Memo, that it was probably faked. (Anyone think that (memo) was a "false flag operation, btw?"

Other than the stupifyingly obvious fact that LGF has not one single reporter, who, other than the ditto-lizards would pay any attention to purported "facts" from LGF, a far-right wingnut site?

And the notion of "Pajamas Media" where a confederacy of dunces will "report", is the nexus of it's downfall. Simply unbelievable, to put it politely.

By the way... any more news about "Pajamas Media"?

Time to put up a "MIA" clock... maybe.

How about 'Major terrorist attack in Egypt, 65 dead'

....?

How 'bout "Terrorists Attack Egypt, LGF Still Utterly Useless"?

LGF is useful -- to terrorists and enemies of this country.

Terrorist recruiters can point to the extremist blabbermouths on LGF and falsely claim they represent the USA.

LGF are the real traitors.

LGF is bad. Bombers? Um, yeah.
